“Cinema is the most beautiful fraud in the world.”
I have to confess, I can be entertained (read: distracted from actual work) for hours with top ten lists, particularly those with interesting subjects like, "Top Ten Books I Would Save in a Fire" or "10 Mystery Novels I'd Most Like to Find in Summer Rentals" (for excellent author top ten lists, read Anna Quindlin's How Reading Changed My Life or those listed on Campaign for the American Reader). I also like movie top ten lists (strangest I've found are top ten "movie spaceships" and top ten "losing of virginity" movies--includes The Graduate, of course) and music lists (as my cohort here at Kraftworkin oft mentions the excellent My Top Five..).
One of my favorite blogs, Apartment Therapy, posted recently about their Top 10 Decor Inspiration Films. For me this means those “pretty movies” that inspire me to paint my walls turquoise or buy an orange bedspread and amber Moroccan tea glasses. Apartment Therapy is a little more intellectual about it, as they run the gamut from Amelie to A Clockwork Orange.
Here’s my own spur-of-the-moment top ten list (in no particular order):
- Fur
- High Art
- Desk Set
- The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
- Picnic at Hanging Rock
- Swimming Pool
- The Royal Tenenbaums
- The Virgin Suicides
- f or nostalgia's sake: Foxfire
- for the cheese factor: Under the Tuscan Sun (of course)
