f.o. : wave sweater.
Wow, the Wave Sweater by Spektakelstrik - Mie Firring was a real journey. The first part of the journey was deciding on whether to go subtle with my color choices or to be bold. It took awhile but I finally settled on straddling both—this is Knitting for Olive Heavy Merino, my first time using this yarn. It’s a workhorse for sure. The poppy (blue) is my bold—and the marzipan for the main is my gentle. I love the colors but will I wear it?
The second part of the journey was getting the fit right—I didn’t want it as oversized as the sample and there are absolutely no schematics for this pattern (boo). So, it’s a gamble I wouldn’t risk if you are newer to knitting. Schematics really matter.
The final part of the journey was in the pattern writing itself. I had trouble making the chart work on the underarm — so I had to fumble my way through and I’m not that satisfied. At least it is under the arm so noticing will be minimal. My underarm waves appear a bit longer than the rest of the chart. I must have ripped this out a dozen times and tried again. Not for the weak and I never did get it quite right. Anyone else have this trouble and want to send pointers my way?
I wouldn’t suggest someone new to knitting take on this pattern. I also ended up doing a different neckline by picking up after to give a bit more structure to a traditional top down raglan and completed 1x1 rib instead of twisted rib.
All and all, I’m only mildly satisfied. The fit is spot on but there are flaws. I wish I had either gone EXTRA bold or really subtle. This sitting in between just isn’t quite working for me but I doubt I have the fortitude to knit this again. I wish I had used a little mohair on the color work to give it some fuzz. And I should have done lavender and poppy blue, or orange and poppy blue, for example.
You can see my project notes here. Convince me I need to wear this, at least once.
